BDCU is not just like a bank, even though we have all the same accounts, technology and expertise.
The difference is we have no external shareholders.
BDCU is owned by its members. Profits go back to our members and our Highlands and Tablelands communities.
Membership is open to all residents in these communities and their families, wherever their family members may be.
As a member, you receive a slew of benefits. Unlike a bank, these include fair fees, better interest rates and enjoyable service experiences.
Rather than Branches, we have 'Advice Centres'. That may sound silly but think of it this way. Advice is what we are really in the business of. It's honest and straightforward.
An institution owned by stockholders has a different objective to us. Our objective is to help you get where you want to go.
BDCU was previously known as Berrima District Credit Union. Berrima was where it originated.
It started by motivated staff at Southern Portland Cement Works (now Blue Circle) in 1963.
The employees needed to give each other a leg up and the concept of a credit union was born. This meant savings were pooled together and loans for basic goods could be made to each other at a reasonable rate.
Over the decades, this 'people helping people' approach flourished beyond the Cement Works. Now there are four Advice Centres and one Call Centre.
We have extended to Goulburn where there has also been demand for a community based credit union.
Our longest serving member (thus far) is Kathie Cupitt who wrote a detailed History.
